"Why Are You Fearful?"

First snow on the Mountain November 9, 2011

“Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?”
(Words of Jesus, Matthew 8:26)

Have you ever asked yourself that question? I have, and as life and circumstances get more and more difficult in these trying times, I find myself asking that question almost every day! “Why am I so fearful?”

Jesus had just finished the “Sermon on the Mount” and seeing great multitudes (crowds of people) had gathered about Him, He said to the disciples, “Let's cross over to the other side.” (The other side of the Sea of Galilee). There were multitudes and there were disciples.

The multitudes were there to have their needs met. The disciples were there to “follow Him.”
Jesus was separating the disciples from the multitudes. He's doing that today.
In Matthew 24:25-32, we see Jesus separating the sheep (followers, disciples), from the goats ( multitudes). Are we willing to go to the “other side” with Jesus?

A certain Scribe came to Him and said, “Teacher, I will “follow you wherever you go!”

Really, “wherever you go? Big statement, eh. It reminds me of the statement the children of Israel made at Mt Sinai just before the Law was given. They said, “We are well able to do all that the Lord has commanded us this day.”

Well Kids, Bible history clearly shows us, they could not perform all that God commanded them that day! That's why Jesus had to die, so we could be righteous in Gods eyes. Only God can perfectly fulfill the requirements of the Law. He did so on our behalf!

We're still making that statement today, aren't we. “I will follow you, wherever you go

Jesus replied to the scribe, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Matthew 8:20

Sounds like following Jesus could include some discomfort. (Not in America though, right?)

Then, one of the disciples said, “Lord let me first go and bury my father.” Seems like there's always something to do “first” before we can “follow” Jesus doesn't it. What will be first today?

Jesus said, “Follow me and let the dead bury their own dead.” Are there any “dead” getting in the way of following Jesus in your life today? Walk away!

When Jesus got into the boat to cross over to the “other side” the disciples followed Him.
Matthew 8:23

What happened next is very interesting to me. A storm came up on the Lake! They followed Him and the first thing that happened was a storm! Jesus led the disciples into a storm! Hmmm, imagine that.

Where better to learn to trust God then in a storm? Faith that's not tested is not faith. It's in the storms of life, if we are following Him as He said, we will see, if we will only trust, that He is able to bring us through!

He can do what we cannot. Unlike the Hebrew children who said, We are well able,” but were not and the Scribe who said, “I will follow you anywhere,” but did not; Jesus is well able to perform all that God the Father has commanded. He is worthy to be followed!

Now while the storm was raging the bible says that Jesus was asleep in the boat!

Ever feel like God might be taking a nap while you are facing the “storms” of your life?

Look what happens next. “then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord save us, we are perishing.” When we call upon the Lord he answers.

Jesus said, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?”

Jesus not only asked the question but, He gave the answer. We are fearful when we have little or no faith that Jesus is who He says He is, when we doubt that He loves us fully, and when we think, “No way would He save me from this storm, I don't deserve it.”

The truth is, we don't deserve it, He deserved it for us on the cross! He proved He loves us fully and completely when He suffered the crucifixion on our behalf! If God did not spare His own Son to show His great love for us, why would He withhold any other good thing.?

He proved that He is who He said He is when He rose from the dead three days later and was witnessed by over 500 people! Written about by Josephus the Roman Historian!

Yes, He is who He says He is, He does what He says He will do, and He has proven He loves us fully and completely; there is nothing that will ever separate us from that love! Romans 8:31-39

Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm.” Matthew 8:26b

So, is He worth following? Yes!

Will He do what He said He will do? Yes!

Does He love you? Yes!

Does He have ALL power in Heaven and Earth? Yes!

So why are you fearful?
